I just wanted to add that the new ads did surprisingly well for us. Yesterday was the first full day that we had them up and we made about $25 from them. In comparison to the $10 per day that we were averaging from the banner ads, I think we did ok. Granted, those ads are much less passive and much more intrusive than the others that we were using--but the payouts are much, much higher.
In advertising (Internet advertising, especially), everything is based on the whole idea of 1000 eyeballs. Though there are different approaches to advertising that don't necessarily have anything to do with paying for eyeballs, the idea of 1000 people viewing an ad is the standard by which all kinds of marketing campaigns are compared--and this standard is referred to as an 'equivalent cost per thousand', or eCPM.
We had roughly 3000 pageviews yesterday--not a lot, I know, but we're working on it. But from that 3000 pageviews, we were able to make $25. So what we do next is turn this into a value that can be compared to the old banners that we had on the site. And here are the results:
Regular Old Banners: $1.00 per 1000 impressions
Annoying Forms You Fill Out: $25.00 per 3000 impress =
$8.33 per 1000 impressions
Hmm, seems like we're doing 8-times better with the CPL-stuff than with the normal ads. Interesting...
Sorry that I'm getting all boring and businessy on you guys; not terribly exciting stuff, but it's what makes the donations possible.
