So now that school is out (for the next few weeks, anyway), I can spend some time looking into our 501(c)3-application. We received a semi-prepared application about a week ago from our pro bono attorneys. Unfortunately, I was smack-dab in the middle of trying to pass my classes (which is always an iffy situation), so I could spend all that much time making sure that everything was in proper order. And then I had some family come up from Texas--yada, yada, yada--ok, I'm back in mode.
For the most part, the application is ready to go. The only thing that I have left to do is prepare the financial statement, which shouldn't take but two wags of a dog's tail. Basically, it's just a list of all of the money that we made this year (a little under $8000) and then another list of where it all went (to about a dozen or so charities). Lastly, I'm supposed to include some kind of guesstimation on how much we are going to be making for the next three years. Hmm...I think $50,000 next year, $200,000 the year after, and then $2,000,000 in year three. No law against being optimistic ;)
Ok, so the application gets sent off to Washington on Friday. And then what? Well, a whole lot of nothing, unfortunately. I think it usually takes about 3-months for them to come to any kind of a decision, so we might not be hearing back from them until some time in March. But that doesn't mean that we can't let it be known that we are on our way to official 501(c)3-status; I intend to place some kind of a little image on the site explaining to everyone that we are currently "501(c)3-pending". Kind of like "patent-pending", except for charity.
And there it is there. I'll be sure to let you know if anything else comes up.
