Traffic Reports

Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 8:08:19 PM

There's been a bit of talk on the comment wall about how the traffic really hasn't exploded as we might have expected. Overall I think we are doing ok, but that's just it--we are only doing ok. Obviously, the goal is not to do just ok.

We implemented the new search results page about a month ago and thought that it was going to really take off. Unfortunately, though, there was only a mild pop as a result of the new feature. (Scratching head.) But it's nothing to really dwell on because things are starting to pick up. Just look at all of those graphs!

So I have four graphs that track two different things. The first thing is the number of visitors that the site has received. The first graph shows how many visitors we've been averaging over the last year and the second is the number from the last month. Notice a nice little upward trend towards the tail end of this month?

The third and fourth graphs describe what is most important to us--pageviews. Pageviews is what we turn into cash. The more pageviews that we have (from lots of different people, of course), the more money our advertisers send our way. Which, of course, let's us send out more money to the charities that you all choose every month, but you already know the spiel.

The third graph reflects our pageviews over the last year and the fourth one zooms in on the last month. See that spike? That is exactly what I love to see. Why it is happening or from where it is all coming from, I don't really know, but hopefully we can keep the trend going. One thing that I have noticed is the increase in the use of "Tell A Friend" (which is located in the top-right corner of each page). I don't have precise figures, but I did see a lot more referrals from email providers over the last month than we have ever had. Nice.
