I find it sad that some people entirely misunderstand the mandate and the vision of Christian relief and humanitarian organisations, of which there a many examples. Christians have a calling to care for the poor, the oppressed, widows, orphans, etc. (which is clear if you read the NT). Christian organisations provide assistance and help because we want to lead by example and are motivated by compassion. I do not see other religious organisations doing the same (correct me if I'm wrong). It is definately not the case of convert and receive relief.....

I love this search engine and tell all my friends about it. Just a quick note to Lexi - the authors of the book Freakonomics indeed have a unique way of analyzing statistics, but one should actually read their work before critiquing it. The study you cited is very complex and controversial, yet it has been proven to be valid. Back to SK, I don't know how the advertising works but I was quite offended by the first thing that popped up saying "Bob the Bum wants you to win an Apple iPod" along with a stereotypical picture of an unkept older man. I work with an older homeless population and find these types of messages and comments, especially in advertising, to be highly distasteful, disrespectful, and insulting. I don't know how they decide to allow certain ads, but I hope this one gets taken off.

--I just made some edits to the ad-code--that particular ad shouldn't appear at that location, if at all, anymore. --Syed

I can't figure out how a dance company manages to be a charity! I'd really like to see your money go to helping people have food and shelter for themselves and their children.
Please think before you vote!!

While I too would prefer to see the money go to a more worthy cause -- i.e., one that provides food / medicine / shelter (ESPECIALLY in light of the recent disasters in China and Myanmmar) --I must commend Koresh for advertising SK on their site...certainly a "win-win" situation for both parties.

I agree with you Beau. Of course it's important to encourage youths to follow their dreams and pursue positive activities, ie dancing, but I would say that starving children come first--just a personal opinion. I would like to suggest again the idea of categorizing the charities; each type of charity gets its own poll (one week for AIDS-oriented charities, one for disaster relief, one for cancer, etc.) so that every kind of cause is ensured some kind of attention. I dont know, just a thought, maybe not a good one.

On a side note, it's nice that everyone has managed to speak their opinion thus far without being confrontational, just reasonably expressing their own convictions.

I'd like to suggest Children's Restoration Network.

I don't understand what is charitable about Koresh Dance Company after looking at their web site.

Either way, the reason they are winning is because they are bringing in a bunch of voters from their own following, and in a way that is the point. Though I feel World Vision is a better cause, they aren't plastering our name on their front page in an attempt to get the money. They aren't competing as if they want/need the money. For that reason, if Koresh wins, it's fair and square regardless of their cause.

Maybe some people don't want to vote for World Vision because they believe that it is harmful and predatory to try to convert desperate people to Christianity.

Just saying.

Please list Youth Partners Net among charities to vote for. YPN serves children and youth in America's high-risk communities, including urban areas and Indian reservations. They partner with local groups to provide quality after-school programs and summer day camp activities designed to empower, educate, encourage and train leaders for the next generation. Their web address is www.youthpartnersnet.org.
