The article makes some good points, definitely- plus, I'm also worried about SK's ability to split the funds and support a charity and a child. I think there needs to be an emphasis on recruiting supporters rather than re-vamping the charities just yet. Do you guys have a Twitter? Might be a good way to get followers!

Wow that is quite the turn around from supporting Compassion International some months ago.I thought your site was doing good for people but putting articles up that are negative of organizations trying to help is low.Search kindly doesn't seem so kind now.By the way Compassion is a five star charity and the letters I receive show a maturing child who once had no hope now has hope to be higher educated and help her Country. This is the last time I visit this negative site.Boo to tasteless content

The author raises some valid points. I think if I were a child who didn't have a sponsor but all my friends did, that I would probably feel inferior. It's sad that these programs seem targeted more at the donor's vanity than the needs of the children. I admit that I would probably find the prospect of receiving thank-you letters from kids very tempting as a way to prove to myself that I was a "good person," but it seems we need to stop thinking about our needs and focus on their needs.

I liked the idea about sponsoring a child, but also had concerns about whether we're raising enough money for that.
Now I've read the new blog, I think maybe it would be better if we used that money for something else- maybe microloans? That way, it is still a personable way to help someone else. As an added bonus, we get the money back (to reloan or to give out, if we get behind again).
I'm not sure if we could go through a charity to do this, but I've found www.kiva.org to be a good site.

That's a great idea!
Like L3na, I was wondering if there would be enough funds coming in to really support both the CoM and the lit program, but I think helping just one kid and getting direct feedback will definitely make SK more personable, and also a better way to see how this money we are raising is making a real, lasting impact.

I think that school program would be nice, but we're hardly making any money as it is, and only send $30 to a charity would be sad. So SPREAD THE WORD!

Love the update Syed, i'm only worried about what L3na said- we might not be making enough to support both efforts at the moment. Hopefully that will change with time either way.

I support your idea of a literacy programme. But will you be sponsoring just one child (directly, anyway)? x

The literacy program definitely sounds like a great idea. I'm all for it. Would there be enough funds to support both endeavors though? (i.e. fund raising for other charities and fund raising for the lit program?)
