Ever seen the documentary movie "My Date with Drew"??-the reason I bring it up is cause this guy made all these amazing attempts and efforts to get through to Drew Barrymore to try to get a single date with her...Spoiler alert: and he finally did...close to 60 days later...and it ends up she had literally just found out he was trying to get this message and request to her. It was not that she was ignoring him, it was that she didn't know. It wasn't getting to her. And he really really tried, a cazillion different promising ways. Funny movie.
We just got to keep plugging away, and we will eventually reach someone with some strong influence, and likely they will say I just literally found out about this...

Once again, the idea of this site is great. The downer is that nobody really knows about it. Maybe we can contact a celebrity. I know that we have tried Ellen before, or at least wanted to.

--Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm pretty sure that a couple of people dropped a line to some celebrities, but still no dice. I think that would be a great idea, if we could just get through to someone. What I'm working now is getting federal tax-exempt status so that we can have tons of free advertising through Google, Yahoo, and a bunch of other media outlets. But I'm not saying this to discourage any other ideas. Please let me know if you all have any other ideas.

I would like to recommend two charities for the next poll that are both taking different approaches to helping North Korean refugees. Not many people are aware of the human rights violations taking place within the borders of North Korea because information is not allowed to filter out of the country. The information we do have on the violations taking place within the walls come from North Korean refugees, who if repatriated are probably put in concentration camps or killed, and from an "underground railroad" much like the one that was established during the Civil War era. People go in and risk their lives to help North Koreans escape into China, where even then they are not completely free. China will capture the North Koreans and repatriate them back to North Korea. There's an excellent documentary out there titled "Seoul Train" that clearly illustrates what it's like to be an average North Korean. Many North Koreans are malnourished, uneducated, ill, and scared for their life. No one should live like that. So, these two organizations help to combat that problem of basic human rights.

1. Helping Hands Korea http://www.helpinghandskorea.org/confronting_crisis.htm This organization sends it money to directly support the workings of the underground railroad - help North Koreans get established in China, fund safe houses, etc.

2. Liberty in North Korea http://www.linkglobal.org/ This organization seeks more of a legislative solution - getting China to recognize North Koreans as refugees and therefore preventing repatriation, urging South Korea and the international community to condemn North Korea for its human rights violations, encourage the UN to get involved, etc.

I would like to suggest a great charity to donate money to. that charity is Amor Ministires. They are based in San Diego and they send groups of people down to Mexico in order to build houses for families in need. It is not a big house, only about 11 feet by 22 feet, but it improves the quality of living for the families in Mexico. A great foundation to donate to!

Can't get to the ad survey. Click doesn't work for me...

--Thanks for letting me know. It appears that enough people have already filled out the survey because they I don't think they are showing that ad anymore. I'll go ahead and take those things down.--Syed

I'm from San Francisco and we've been using instant runoff voting (or ranked choice voting) for a couple years now, but before that when we were electing a mayor or people for the board of supervisors or anything like that, you just voted for one candidate. If a candidate got more than 50% of the vote, he or she won. If that candidate got a plurality (under 50% but still more than everyone else), there would be a runoff election between the top two candidates. As far as I know that's how voting works most other places in the US, although the presidential elections are different. I'll let someone else explain that one though.

I hope that helped some!

I was trying to work out how instant runoff works... and then I realised it is what we use in Australia for our elections, and almost everything else (School captains ect)
What do Americans use?

--Oh boy. Umm, does anyone out there want to field this one?--Syed

In response to Andrew's comment, I don't think you should judge the rate of raised money based on 4th of July week--if you're in the US and you SK mostly at work, or you went on vacation this week with family/friends but without a computer, that could affect the numbers greatly for just one week.
I see what you mean about half the users SKing for a charity they didn't vote for, but for this month...I feel like the top two charities in the final poll would have appealed to a relatively similar demographic of users. Perhaps many users out there in favor of SafeHouse would have chosen Equality Now as a second choice, or vice versa. Then again, maybe everyone's second choice could have been Charity X but it was almost no one's first choice so it ended up with 6% of the vote when it could have had 30%.
A solution to that could be ranked choice voting--so you list a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice of the possible charities, and your vote counts more for the 1st choice than the 2nd and 3rd. It's worth a thought, and it could eliminate situations where a charity wins with 35% of the vote, but the other 65% wanted anything else to win. And it does so in a way without splitting up the money, which SK users have voted against in the past. I'd be interested in hearing what people think about using ranked choice voting here.

--Ann, the solution that you just proposed is somewhat similar to this:

Instant Runoff Voting

And it's definitely something that we are in the process of implementing. If only we had more hours in the day...Thanks for the suggestion.--Syed

I was a supporter of the "Let the group decide" side of the "Should we support X charity" debate.
However, it has occured to me that the downside to this is that you could potentially have up to half the users searchingkindly for a charity they do not support.
I wonder if that is the case this month (at this rate we will be pushed to break $200!).
Yet I don't think we should abandon democracy. One solution I have thought of is letting everyone *choose* one charity that half of their contribution goes to, and the other half goes to the 'group' charity we all vote on. So even if the group charity wasn't exciting some users, they could still be supporting something they care about. I suggest also that this would work best with a limited range (maybe 10 or so) of 'free-choice charities' so that donations were combined accross users to create meaningful donations (rather than 2000 charities receiving $0.05 each month).
