Good work on last month! I was wondering how you figured out how many diggs we need to get on the front page? The ones I can see seem to have hundreds!
--Actually, no one knows for sure what it takes to get noticed on Digg, but there are some bloggers who are really good at winding up on the front page on a regular basis...and from what they've said, 52 diggs within a 24-hour period is supposedly some kind of magic number. As for where the hundreds of diggs come from--that happens when a submission actually makes the front page. Only one way to find out...--Syed

I know the day isnt over yet, and its the weekend etc, but if the number of people using this site keeps increasing, as I have a sneaking suspicion it will, and thus the "donation rate" (so to speak) remains the same or increases, then wouldn't that put 30 days at about 1000 dollars?
--Actually, today was an odd day, as far as usage and money-raised goes. Our ad network calculates how much we make based on Pacific Standard Time, but the Search Kindly clock is on Chicago-time...so there were two hours of donations from last night that didn't make it into last month's total. And it was a pretty significant two hours (last minute votes and all), so today's thermometer-reading is somewhat unusual. That being said, my guess is that we can hit $1000 if we all really put forth the effort (an effort that is in line with our ad network's terms of service, of course).
I'm going to go ahead and change that now.

Dear Syed,
This is a brilliant idea. I changed my home page to Search Kindly. I sincerely hope you reach your goal.
Best wishes,

First, of all, I think it might be okay to give 2nd place a share b/c although it may seem strange to make it better for 2nd place than first; a new charity on the list for the following month might beat them out- and it would be sure to bring all the voters for that charoty back for the following month.
Second, I think you should note the monthly goal next to the thermometer, otherwise newcomers may not have any idea what the thermometer means. Perhaps the current text could be revised to read "This month we've raised $445.36 toward our March goal of $400."
Thirdly, the only 2 places I've seen mention of your plans for everyone to digg SK (at 10:00am on April 4) are easy to miss... you may want to consider putting up a blog post reminding people to mark their calendars and tell their friends; or an easy-to-see note (that you could take down before 10am April 4)near the search box to make all SKers aware.
Finally, to all the readers out there: Way 2 go on voting! I want to encourage you to check out Blood:Water mission for next month, I believe you will find it as worthy a cause as any other: with a mission against AIDS... where the condition is such that single dollars will save lives for years. It has a simple solution: all that is needed is the money to build the wells... Thank you!
--To answer your second comment--I'm just waiting on the creation of a module to let me write in that black space right next to the thermometer--I'll be sure to make things more clear once I can.
And the third comment--I'll post a note up at the top of the screen.
Thanks for the comments.--Syed

But then the ideal thing would be to keep getting 2nd place every month =P

So will you be posting the original digg article on
Wednesday?
--Yes, I will. My username at Digg is SearchKindly (what else would it be?).--Syed

Syed - in your comment below, would 2nd place (team A) still be in the poll for next month? Otherwise the scenario you came up with would mean noone would want to get 2nd place since you only get 20% of the months donation (approx), and then won't be on any polls for the rest of the year. In that case, it would better to get 3rd place since they wouldn't receive any of the next months donation, but would probably have a good chance of getting 1st place in the next poll, and in turn receive the majority of the following months donation. Ok hope that wasn't confusing! In my opinion, I think it's fine to just give 100% of the earnings to the 1st place team, and take them off the poll for the rest of the year. So many options though...
--Good point. No, second place would still be in the running for the following month. So if you think about it, the best thing for a charity to be is second place one month, and first place the next. But I don't know that the charities really have that much to do with the results. I mean, it's the volunteers here that have the final word.
You're right about the options...and it's so hard to make rules when the game's never really been played before. But I'm sure if we all toss in our two cents, we'll figure something out. Thanks.--Syed

Such a close race here! You guys are doing an incredible thing here, congratulations! I'm curious though, does second place get any kind of monetary donation or is it just the winning team? These guys are neck and neck!
--It is a close one! Our initial plan was to have the winner get the entire jackpot. But this race is so close it wouldn't seem right for second place to go away empty-handed. So for this poll, second place will receive half of its final percentage. For example, if Team-A gets second place, but receives 40% of the entire vote, then they will receive a check for 20% of the month's donation. That way first place takes the lion's share, but second place still gets something.--Syed

Not sure what you mean about "fixing" the thermometer. As far as I can tell it's still "broken" (i.e. not at the max value). Also, any word yet on getting back into Google AdSense? Wouldn't that allow you to have the search toolbar go directly to the results page and still get some of the cut? Would Yahoo offer a similar arrangement? If so, what do you think of offering the direct-results via the search toolbar being provided by Yahoo while having the main page still using Google? And finally, don't we have more than 58 people visiting the site regularly? Aren't there enough of us to put SK on the front page of Digg if you just tell us the day to digg it, without having to put up a video or anything?
--Good stuff here!
1. Thanks for catching that; the thermometer should be at max now.
2. I'm not going to hit up Google to reinstate AdSense until we have a lot more traffic hitting the site. I've set that goal at $2000 per month. So once we hit that number, then I'll contact them and let them know how we've grown and what kind of security measures we have in place to prevent click-fraud, etc.
3. Yahoo: I tried to get into their program, but they still haven't gotten back to me. Twice I tried, actually. But just so that you know, neither Google nor Yahoo pays out just for displaying results. The pay out is based on clicking on ads. I like your idea, though I'm extremely partial to Google's search results. If I hear back from Yahoo, I'll let everyone know.
4. You're right, we have way more than 58 people who visit Search Kindly everyday--more like 2000 different people. But only 60 or so read the blog on a regular basis. The reason I was thinking about putting a video on Search Kindly was just to attract all the other diggers--there seems to be certain things that get dugg more frequently than other things, and videos usually do pretty well. But a few people have already commented that a stunt like that might take away from the credibility of Search Kindly, so I'm just going to write something on the blog that talks about what we're trying to do and hope for the best that way.
Good comments, thanks.--Syed
