I restarted my computer and it's still not working. I'm being deprived of my votes! (:
--Hi Caroline,
Can you tell me which browser and which version of that browser you are using?

Hello! The last time I voted was 10:30 last night, but the poll still says I've voted recently. Is this a widespread problem, or just my computer?
--Hmm. Can you try again and let me know what happens. It seems to be working fine for everyone else--but I'm not ruling out the possibility that it's a server glitch. --Syed

Great site, your unselfish efforts are very much appreciated. Could instructions for setting up a secondary homepage be added to the site along with the ones already there for setting up a primary homepage? Have been pushing this idea and it would be nice to be able to direct people to the site for additional help.
--Hi Dave,
That's a really good idea. I'll make sure that gets on the shortlist for things I have to do. I'll post something about this in a future blog and also make sure that it gets added to the menu. --Syed

I have been trying, in vain, to get the point across that WD is about animals AND people. However, I will let them prove their own point: http://wildlifedirect.org/blogAdmin/manioc/
This is just one example of their wonderful, holistic approach to people, animals, and the environment. And just one other point of clarification, I know there was some distress that a well-funded organization like WWF made it to the poll -- I believe, if I am not mistaken, that the goal was if they won to donate that money to an effort they are spearheading to provide firewood to the hundreds of thousands of refugees being displaced due to current conflicts in the DR Congo, in particular, within and just outside the Virunga park borders. For more information you can check out this link:
http://www.panda.org/how_you_can_help/donate/help_virunga_gorillas/index.cfm
At the end of the day, I would just ask that people not judge something before they know something about it...again, that is what is what is so great about this site, it allows each of us to become truly familiar with other organizations and causes.

I apologise to anyone who thought I was being nasty I certainly didn't mean to, but it is a plain fact that animal suffering is caused by humans whether directly or indirectly. I suppose we could go on like this forever because everyone does have different views, but the supporters of Wildlife Direct did spend a lot of time passing on info to friends etc about this site to get WD voted for which is why it came out on top. If you feel strongly about a certain project then you have to spread the word. I am as much concerned about humans as I am about the animals welfare. I know I check on WD everyday not only because of the welfare of the animals, but also to find out updates of the rangers and their families who are also caught up in fighting and so many have been killed as a result of their efforts, the people that cause this suffering have no regard for human or animal welfare and therefore it is our responsibility to try and do something at least.

The people that voted for Wildlife Direct are very passionate about this incredible conservation vehicle for very good reason. The very survival of our planet rests on the survival of all delicate ecosystems and the diverse wildlife these ecosystems sustain around this world. Wildlife Direct is about saving all life forms, plant, animal, human, insects, fish, etc. Wildlife Direct is about education and sustainable living for the good of all species on this planet. This is why it won the October poll and deservedly so!

I think you should look into another method of checking whether or not someone has voted recently (perhaps using IP addresses instead of cookies). I say this because I read a complaint last month about an animal-based charity skyrocketing in the votes, and I've noticed something similar with Rolling Dog this month. In fact, (I admit, it is sort of cheating), I went from computer to computer in the library here, voting for Amnesty International, and for every vote I submitted for AI, another was given to Rolling Dog. I had a hypothesis that deleting cookies would allow one to vote repeatedly within the 8-hour limit. Sure enough, when I tested my hypothesis, it rang true. Sure, Rolling Dog is a warm and fuzzy charity, but Amnesty International and the Innocence Project (among others) have much greater potential to do more good in the world. And nothing has allayed my suspicions that foul play is ongoing.
(Also, you should make this comment box bigger.)
--Umm, yeah, you're right. The only thing I can do is hope for the best right now. Being that we have nothing but volunteers working on the programming, we're kind of spread thin as far as making fixes to those kinds of issues--which isn't to say that we aren't thinking about solutions. We'd be all over the IP-tracking, if it wasn't for the fact that some universities hide all of their users behind one IP. That's really our biggest sticking point for not using that method. But hey, if you have any other suggestions, we're all ears. --Syed

I really did not at all intend to be disrespectful, and certainly did not intend to put down Wildlife Direct as an organization. However I am genuinely afraid that we are largely unaware of the situations in the third world that I have seen, and am desperate for them to make people aware. Please understand that what I say is not out of self-righteousness or anger or disrespect, butout of fear. Today we live in a global village, and literally have easy means to feed, clothe, educate, and provide healthcare for every human on the planet, and instead we buy simple medication to cure our pet dogs from heart worms without thinking twice that there are People that die from heartworms (let alone the thousands from things as simple as diarrhea) simply because the people that have the dollar to cure them don't seem to know the problem exists.

my intention certainly was not to stir up animosity, i was just surprised when i saw the majority of votes cast in the direction of wildlife. I absolutely love animals and think they are important to our world but i personally believe that humans have been placed in authority above animals and that there are much larger problems in the world....like the tragedy in Darfur and the starving children.
